How to Address Cognitive Health in Schizophrenia

Cognitive health, which refers to the ability to think, learn, and remember clearly so we function at our best in daily life, is a concern for many people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Although cognitive challenges associated with schizophrenia are highly prevalent, very few receive cognitive treatment, or even acknowledgement of the concern. Cognitive remediation is the only evidence based treatment available to address the cognitive challenges associated with schizophrenia This lecture will review the key characteristics of cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia, describe what cognitive remediation is, its evidence base, when and for whom it is used, and the role of motivation in treatment outcomes. Evidence based, practical and scalable methods for addressing cognitive health in the clinical setting will be discussed.

About Anthony Vitucci:

Anthony Vitucci was 23-years-old when he passed. He had his first psychotic episode December of 2014. He was an avid soccer player, loved going to the beach and going fishing as well as working out at the gym. He was kind, caring and would help anyone in need. He was funny and always playing jokes on me (his mom). Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and frequently expressed how grateful he was for the devoted and diligent care we provided for him during his illness.

The Vitucci lecture has been accredited for 1.5 CEU credits. CE is available for physicians, psychologists (American Psychological Association), counselors and social workers.
